Samsung Patents An Interesting Hybrid Laptop Design – Android Headlines

Samsung has patented a rather interesting hybrid laptop design. This patent appeared over at the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), and it shows a tablet with a detachable, and foldable display.

So, not only are you getting a full-fledged laptop here, but you also get a tablet, that folds into a more compact form factor. Needless to say, there are a lot of use cases here.

Samsung patented a hybrid laptop design

This patent is classified as a “multi-foldable electronic device”, and it has been released on January 13. It comes with a regular physical keyboard. The display folds horizontally, like a book, not vertically, like one the Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Fold and ASUS Zenbook 17 Fold.

You will find two hinges on this device. One hinge is there as on every regular laptop, so that you can open and close it. The second hinge is included on the display itself, as it folds.

Samsung also included a handy clip with a hook in order to be sure the device doesn’t fold on its own. There are also quite a few magnets built into it. When folded, users have access to various audio player functions, as there are three buttons included on the side (rewind, fast forward, and pause).

This design sure is unique

One thing is for sure, this is a rather unique design. When you don’t need your laptop with you, you can simply detach the display, and carry that part. If you don’t plan on doing any work, or you just plan to unwind in the bed or something.

It’s also great for non-work travel, and so on. The whole point is, you wouldn’t have to buy two devices, you’d have both in one package. A huge tablet when you need it, and a regular laptop as well.

Now, just because Samsung patented this, doesn’t mean that it’ll become official anytime soon, or at all. It’s an interesting device, to say the least, but there are no guarantees.

Samsung likes to experiment, though, and this could come to us own the line, we’ll see. Various different foldable devices could be on the way, as the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Z Flip 3 have proven to be immensely popular.
